Thankfully, this is not a roguelike game, and you get to start over before the obstacle that killed you rather than start from the beginning of the game. The game advancement is very interesting, in the first half, you encounter bizarre monsters and other children who try to attack you, however, in the second half, there are no other life forms to be seen, and the puzzles get harder to overcome.
It seems the game strays further and further from reality the more you progress, which is an interesting concept. This is a game you should play yourself so you get to experience all the mystery as you unravel the story.

There are few games that look like this one, and the art style alone makes this game so iconic. This game, like so many on this list, is intriguing because of its story and horror elements. The incorporation of history, and the mixing of Asian religions and cultures like Buddhism, Taoism and mythology, tell an unique and terrifying story. That may be because the events of the s White Terror is a very real point in history. Lingering demons and murky hallways.
BonBon is a short horror story about your childhood. No, really This game is all about taking time to experience the objects and events around you. As your parents increasingly demonstrate their absence, your child mind tries to compensate, I would assume, by inventing an imaginary friend. BonBon is an incredibly short game, and plays more like a short story than a game. You play as a toddler, who goes around collecting and putting away toys because your mommy told you to.
I think we all can relate to the tragic undertones of a child trying to process trauma and domestic abuse the only way they know how. As a victim of childhood trauma, this game resonated with me on a deep level and I had to include it in my list.
Hunted and alone, a boy finds himself drawn into the center of a dark project. INSIDE is a dark, narrative-driven platformer perfectly combining intense action and challenging puzzles. This game is beautiful, shocking and terrifying, sometimes all three at once. The beautiful artwork and soundtrack will draw you in to this immersive platformer, and you likely will become a fan too after experiencing the masterpiece of INSIDE.
Just smile and wave: You try not to get caught. As the lone survivor of a passenger jet crash, you find yourself in a mysterious forest fighting for survival against a society of cannibalistic mutants.
You will build shelters, explore, and try to survive in this terrifying first person survival horror simulator. What I love about The Forest is the survival mechanic. You actually have to chop down trees to collect lumber to start a camp or make a fire to stay warm. You have to scavenge and hunt for food to prevent yourself from starving. All while fighting for your life against your unusual and hostile neighbors. You also have plenty of choices in how far you are willing to go to survive. Will you just live off the land and scavenge to survive, or resort to going native and cannibalizing the cannibals?
That choice is up to you. During the day you will be busy collecting resources to build a simple camp up to an impenetrable fortress. You can craft and lay traps and defenses to keep your perimeter safe. At night, you must defend your base. However, in The Forest, enemies have their own families, beliefs, morals, and appear almost human. You can either fight them off with crude weapons made of sticks and rocks, or try to use stealth to sneak around and evade them to avoid bloodshed.
The most intriguing thing about the enemies is this game is their ability to make decisions- their behavior changes depending on several factors. Sometimes they will just follow you at a safe distance and check you out. Of course, the encounters with the mutants scared the life out of me, pulling me out of my happy foraging for food and connecting with nature, but building up a giant fortress with traps and a wall to defend my base was a lot of fun.
Your friends can even join you to make these tasks easier. Spending the day exploring the forest, hunting, and collecting resources reminded me of the less scary games I love so much, like Harvest Moon. Offense is the best defense. Visage is a first-person psychological horror game. You will explore a mysterious, ever-changing house in a slow-paced, atmospheric world that combines uncannily comforting and horrifying realistic environments, making this game a genuinely terrifying experience.
The focus of this game is exploration, that slowly builds tension to create a deeper and more meaningful gameplay experience. The story of the game is revealed through surreal imaging and subtle environment details. This game is so high on my list because I feel that the best type of horror is the psychological kind. Games like this that present mind tricks and building suspense with small details are far more frightening to me.

Layers of Fear dares to push the boat out and conjure the darkest of fantasies in a mind-bending story-driven adventure. In spite of the campaign only just about scraping the three-hour threshold, it does possess one of the most enthralling storylines in survival horror. To envision the masterpiece and bring it to fruition, you must battle your inner demons and atone for your questionable past. Easier said than done, of course, as said past is laced with violent tendencies and sadistic morals.
From the minds that delivered us Emily Wants to Play comes Pacify, a psychological horror game that sees players once again going on a series of mind-rendering ghost hunts. However, unlike its predecessor, the segment crams in a multiplayer mode to help alleviate the intensity that binds with roaming a network of ghostly hallways. Pacify drops you in the boots of a paranormal investigator.
To truly pacify the wayward soul, though, you will first have to uncover the truth, as well as the motives that drive her sadistic actions. Although there are enough video games out there to last more than one lifetime, it can still be heartbreaking when an excellent-sounding upcoming game is canceled.

After the release of PT and its sad and unfortunate cancellation , many players took up the mantle in the hopes of creating an experience that paid homage to the feelings that the playable teaser captured. The end result was some of the best Indie Horror games the world has seen so far. To shine a better light on some of these amazing titles, the following list has been updated to include more entries.
One of the things that made PT so alarming was the feeling of dread as players walked through a normal area that seemingly changed and morphed as time went on.
The long and foreboding hallways in PT grew darker and stranger with every pass, making players question if the things they were seeing and hearing had been there all along or if the area around them was actually changing. Layers of Fear takes this concept and cranks it up to 11 by placing players into a seemingly innocent space and then morphing it abruptly and wildly as they progress through each room.
It feels like psychological warfare and it really ramps the horror elements up quickly as players soon find themselves exploring seemingly impossible areas that sprout up like a labyrinth through each new doorway. Unfortunately, the MMO didn't quite grip the masses as the company had hoped but it still managed to develop a small cult following thanks to its impressive environments and Lovecraftian-like visuals.
The Park continues this spooky trend with its beautiful yet macabre adventure into an Amusement Park, a place that many consider light-hearted and fun. Funcom's first-person foray into madness turns an innocent entertainment space into a one-to-two-hour-long nightmare with an underlying story and plenty of dread to be discovered. Players that aren't interested in combat mechanics and are simply looking for an explorative and terrifying experience should check out this Indie title.
When PT first dropped, gamers were fascinated by how visceral and terrifying it really felt. This reverberation throughout the industry was also felt by developers, who took the ideas presented in the "playable teaser" and began to adopt them into their own horrifying adventures. One of the best, and most underrated of these tributes, is Infliction, a masterfully crafted indie horror title that is every bit as scary as the titles that inspired it.
Infliction is panic-inducing and disorienting, putting players in situations where they feel as if they're being hunted by a mysterious entity, all while trying to escape the confines of a maze-like home. It's all packaged together with a story that, while confusing at times, should keep players enthralled enough to keep pushing forward.
Mundaun was developed by Hidden Fields and immediately turned heads with its unique art style. The game begins with the protagonist visiting his grandfather's barn, which he was told had burned down, killing his elderly relative. However, it soon becomes clear that something far more sinister has taken place, and players must investigate what has happened, leading to some shocking discoveries. The game is often tagged as a first-person shooter, though much of the 7-hour runtime is spent solving puzzles and exploring the unsettling town that, surprisingly, is based on a real town in Switzerland of the same name.
