Regarding the data corruption, Quick access gets its data from three different folder locations: Recent items, AutomaticDestinations, and CustomDestinations.

This means that if a certain folder location, which in your case was AutomaticDestinations, isn't working how it's supposed to, or is possibly corrupted, then Quick access won't work as well because it is not able to get the data that it needs from the folder location. The solution provided by Aileen clears these folder locations, hence, restoring Quick access back to default and rid of any corrupted data.
